Review
This is official description applies to version 1.6
Introversion Software presents its third title, DEFCON, a stunning online multiplayer simulation of global thermonuclear war. You play the role of a military Commander hidden deep within an Underground bunker. Your mission - to successfully exterminate your enemy's civilian population whilst disabling their ability to attack your own. Start by launching your battleships, subs and bombers in order to decimate your opponent's defences. Scramble together your alliances but remember only one can stand victorious.
The following review written by one of the Software Informer contributors applies to version 1.4
Defcon is a very innovative and violent strategy game. The game's subtitle is "everyone dies", so you can see where this is going. Defcon is a visual representation of the world and is based on the real-life system and mostly in that system showed in the 1983 movie War Games. You control a country who is faced with certain war, so you have to prepare for it. When you play with more than 2 players, you can form alliances with some of them to annihilate others. You can either play online or use an AI PC player. There are many different ways in which you can overcome your enemy. When the game first starts, you build your country's defenses and its offense. You can build missile silos, submarine fleets, military airports, and radars. When you build a radar, the enemy's location within its range get shown on the screen. While the game progresses, the Defcon state goes from 1 to 5. 5 means all-out war, and that is the only state where you can use nuclear missiles on your enemy. The missile silos serve both as an offensive and a defensive item. But only one at a time. If you are using it to attack you are left defenseless from that silo. So, that is yet another strategic element to be kept in mind. The game actually makes it fun to see how a whole nation gets obliterated. When all your cities are lost, you lose the game. The game premise, though, is that if you don't manage to kill your enemy quick into the conflict, mutual destruction will happen, which is what would really happen if there was a nuclear war between world powers. The multiplayer aspect of the game is great and lots of fun, especially when you play with many people. Besides, Defcon is a really cheap game. |
